The great Sri Lankan cook-off
Sri Lanka is home to some of the best food on the planet. Amazing street food, sumptuous curries, heart-attack inducing deserts, and incredible seafood.
Each one of Sri Lanka's many ethnic communities has its own distinctive types of food. In the north you will find the Tamil influence - red chili powder, gingelly (sesame) oil, and tamarind - whereas in the predominantly Sinhalese areas you will find more black pepper, coconut oil and goraka. Muslim Sri Lankan food is different again - and is famous for its rich deserts such as Watalappan. Both the diversity and similarity in Sri Lankan cuisine make it a powerful tool for building bridges - and only the most bigoted claim not to enjoy the others' cuisine.
So our challenge to you is to use the deliciousness of Sri Lankan food to bring peace and justice to this troubled island.
- Click the "get cooking" button to the left and you will be able to set up your own personal page as a chef. If you don't want your identity made public you can use a fake name.
- We will send you recipe ideas for various delicious types of Sri Lankan food.
- Once you've cooked up a batch, sell them to your friends, family and neighbours.
- Upload the money you make through the "donate now" button on your own personal page - or send it to us and enter it as an "offline amount" (we will show you how to do this)
Your money will be used to support the Sri Lanka Campaign for Peace and Justice in our attempt to help human rights' defenders in Sri Lanka.
