10,400 step challenge

Brand new for 2019, sign up to the 10,400 step challenge today, set yourself a timeframe and take a step for everyone living with cystic fibrosis in the UK.

The 10,400 step challenge is a sponsored fundraiser where you can set your own timescale to achieve a daily goal of walking or running 10,400 steps for a week, two weeks, a month or even longer! Already walk that many steps every day? Why not up the stakes with a challenge of 20,000 steps or even 30,000, or run 10,400 steps a day instead – that’s over 5 miles a day!

Last year surveys showed that half of all adults in the UK walk only 2,000 steps a day, so sign up to the 10,400 step challenge today, get fit for the new year and raise vital funds while you’re at it.

Create your own Everyday Hero page, join our leaderboard, and encourage your friends to do the same. You can even make it a competition, and see who in your friendship group, colleagues or family can walk or run the most steps in a set time!

Counting your steps

You don’t need a top-of-the-range fitness watch to count your steps. You can buy yourself a pedometer for as little as a couple of pounds – then all you need to do is clip it to your belt and start walking!

Why 10,400 steps?

There are currently around 10,400 people with CF living in the UK. That means that for every step you take in this challenge, you’re representing every one of those people and helping to draw attention to one of the most common genetic conditions in the UK.

Top tips

Not sure how to reach your 10,400 steps? Here are some tips to help you get there:

  • Walk to work

  • Take a lunchtime walk

  • Take the stairs, not the lift!

  • Don’t slack on the weekends – go for walks with family and friends, and even your fellow competitors!

The 10,400 step challenge - A special thanks.

We would like to say a special thank you to Amy Gilmour who was the inspiration behind our 10,400 Step Challenge.

In August 2018, Amy along with her friends, family and work colleagues took on 10,000 steps a day for a whole month, in memory of Amy's good friend Albert Rae, who sadly lost his battle to cystic fibrosis in June that year.

It is through the support of our fundraisers like Amy that make the difference to keeping fundraising ideas fresh and current. Amy's "Walk for CF" in memory of Albert raised an amazing £1,163 in 2018, and she is planning to hold her next challenge in July this year.

Cystic Fibrosis Trust

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-limiting inherited condition caused by a faulty gene that controls the movement of salt and water in and out of cells. This causes mucus to gather in the lungs and digestive system and creates a range of challenging symptoms.

More than 2.5 million people in the UK carry the faulty gene, around one in 25 of us – most without knowing.

There is currently no cure for cystic fibrosis but many treatments are available to manage it, including physiotherapy, exercise, medication and nutrition.

Each week five babies are born with cystic fibrosis, and two people die.

More than half of the cystic fibrosis population in the UK will live past 41, and improved care and treatments mean that a baby born today is expected to live even longer.

We believe that the day when people with CF can live a life unlimited by their condition is within our reach
